Patwari among 3 arrested for accepting bribe in J&K
On August 7, 2024, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested three individuals in Jammu and Kashmir for their involvement in a bribery case. Among those arrested was a Patwari (a local revenue officer) from Halqa Soal, Tehsil Katra, District Reasi, along with a property dealer and a middleman. They were accused of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000 from a complainant for the issuance of a revenue extract (Fard) related to a property transaction.
Details of the Arrest
The CBI’s operation was initiated following a complaint against the property dealer, who was allegedly soliciting the bribe on behalf of the Patwari. The investigation revealed that the property dealer was demanding the bribe for facilitating the issuance of necessary documentation for a property being purchased by the complainant’s father.
During the operation, the CBI executed a relay-trap strategy, where the property dealer was first caught red-handed while accepting the bribe. Subsequently, the middleman was apprehended while receiving the bribe from the property dealer, and finally, the Patwari was arrested while accepting the bribe from the middleman.
Legal Proceedings
Following their arrests, all three individuals are set to be presented before the Court of Special Judge, Anti-Corruption (CBI Cases) in Jammu. The investigation is ongoing, and further legal actions are expected as the case unfolds.
This incident highlights ongoing issues with corruption in local government offices in Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and enforcement against such practices.
