Pakistan Election Live Updates: Final Results Give Khan-backed Candidates Lead as Vote Count Concludes- Know Details
Pakistan Election Result 2024 Live: Independents backed by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf seem to be ahead in the final vote count announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan, Reuters reported. According to the final tally on the EC’s website, the Khan-backed Independents have won 101 of the 264 seats, the report said. They are followed by Nawaz Sharif’s PML-N, which won 75 seats, and the Pakistan People’s Party, which secured 54 seats.
Emerging as the largest party in the vote, Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz is currently in talks with other parties, including Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s PPP, to form a coalition government in Pakistan. The PML-N, in a statement released earlier, had said that it has reached a “principle agreement” with the Muttahida Qomi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P), which secured 17 seats in the final tally, for the formation of a coalition government, Dawn reported.
However, MQM-P Convener Khalid Maqbool later said that discussions during the meeting with the PML-N delegation did not involve talks of forming the government, as per Dawn.
Reacting to the recent developments, the PTI called for nationwide protests today to protect the sanctity of the vote. In a statement released on its official X handle, PTI said that it rejects “the efforts of creating a shameful drama like PDM-2 in the country by trampling on the intentions of the people”. The Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) was a coalition of PML-N, PPP and other small parties which succeeded in overthrowing Imran Khan in April 2022.
The party also demanded the immediate resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and other members of the election commission. Several Independents backed by Imran Khan have moved court challenging the victories of high-profile politicians including Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam and former defence minister Khawaja Asif, citing rigging.
